Inbreeding affects juvenile shoaling behaviour in sibling groups of a cichlid fish

چکیده

Abstract Whilst the effects of inbreeding on growth and survival have been well studied, knowledge impact social behaviour is scarce. Animal groups are often composed relatives, which can facilitate cooperation (due to kin selection) improve group performance accordingly. Therefore, increased genetic relatedness in inbred could increase performance, whilst reduced diversity negative (inbreeding depression). We compared juvenile shoaling outbred sibling Pelvicachromis taeniatus (Boulenger 1901), a West-African cichlid fish with mating preferences. Activity (travelled distance), shoal density (inter-individual distance) recovery from disturbance (freezing time) novel environment were analysed using tracking software. Inbred individuals travelled shorter distances individuals, may decrease conspicuousness thus predation risk. Furthermore, recovered faster after suggesting improved coordination. In conclusion, our study revealed differences between groups. The higher positive form conspicuousness. activity impair foraging success under natural conditions might, however, be compensated by disturbances.

Active Inbreeding in a Cichlid Fish and Its Adaptive Significance

Levels of inbreeding are highly variable in natural populations. Inbreeding can be due to random factors (like population size), limited dispersal, or active mate choice for relatives. Because of inbreeding depression, mating with kin is often avoided, although sometimes intermediately related individuals are preferred (optimal outbreeding). However, theory predicts that the advantages of matin...

Microsatellite Support for Active Inbreeding in a Cichlid Fish

In wild animal populations, the degree of inbreeding differs between species and within species between populations. Because mating with kin often results in inbreeding depression, observed inbreeding is usually regarded to be caused by limited outbreeding opportunities due to demographic factors like small population size or population substructuring. However, theory predicts inclusive benefit...

Benefits of kin shoaling in a cichlid fish: familiar and related juveniles show better growth

Group living is widespread in animals. In nature, groups usually not only differ in phenotypic characteristics but also in the social relationships among group members. Theory predicts that individuals adjusting their shoaling decisions—to join certain groups or not—based on social criteria, such as familiarity or genetic relatedness, can increase their fitness. Although numerous studies report...

Social deprivation affects cooperative predator inspection in a cichlid fish

The social environment individuals are exposed to during ontogeny shapes social skills and social competence in group-living animals. Consequently, social deprivation has serious effects on behaviour and development in animals but little is known about its impact on cooperation. In this study, we examined the effect of social environment on cooperative predator inspection. Predator inspection b...

Implications of multiple mating for offspring relatedness and shoaling behaviour in juvenile guppies.

Polyandry (female multiple mating) can confer important benefits to females, but few studies have considered its potential costs. One such cost may arise through differences in the relatedness of offspring born to females with different mating histories; offspring born to monandrous females are always full siblings, while those produced by polyandrous females may be full or half siblings. These...
